Galatasaray Museum
Galatasaray Museum was founded by Ali Sami Yen in 1915. In the museum-related section of the book published in 1955 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Galatasaray Sports Club, the establishment of the museum is described as follows from the memoirs of Ali Sami Yen himself.
“Once upon a time, we would work with all our might to win first place in the inspections carried out by the naval society, and we would use all our personal means for this purpose. At that time, as I was frequently wandering around the caulking place to complete the shortfalls, one day I managed to buy a deep-water sounder sold by an old sailor for 15 kuruş. It was a very old and outdated device. But as we cleaned and polished it, it showed itself on the table in our sailing room. The enthusiasm to bring a second tool with him gradually led to the emergence of our maritime museum. We bought the tools that we were not able to buy with our own means from the then Minister of Naval Affairs, Cemal Pasha, who wanted to encourage us. At that time, we moved the club headquarters from Beyoğlu to Kalamış Bay. I also brought the sports pictures I had collected for myself at home to the club. We provided three display cases for our existing trophies. "When the memories of sea and land sports came together, its appeal grew and thus the Galatasaray Museum gradually emerged."
Created by Ali Sami Yen in 1915 at the Club Club in Kalamış; In the museum, which was Turkey's first sports museum, trophies won until then and maritime equipment were exhibited. However, after the war, when this museum building was seized by the British, Ali Sami Yen handed over all the materials in this first museum to Salih Arif Bey, the high school principal at the time. The decision is taken by the decision of the General Assembly dated 15 May 1919. Thus, the Galatasaray Museum comes to its place in the high school where it will be located for many years. Nowadays, the museum is opened to visitors under the name Galatasaray University Culture and Art Center in the historical Post Office Building opposite the high school.
On the first floor of the center, the story of Galatasaray High School from its establishment to today; There are many objects and photographs such as students' uniforms and the equipment they use in classes; On the second floor, there is the story of Galatasaray Sports Club from its establishment to today, some of the trophies won since 1905, Metin Oktay's jersey and many photographs and sports objects.
