Jale Kuşhan Wax Sculpture Museum
How Did the Idea for the Wax Statue Museum Come About? Let's find out with the explanation of its founder, Jale Kuşhan.
"I am a graduate of A.U. Department of Geophysical Engineering. While working in a construction company in Istanbul, I realized that there was a need for qualified human resources who spoke Russian due to our rapidly increasing commercial, cultural, economic and tourism-based relations with Russia and the countries of the Former Eastern Bloc. Thereupon, the company I worked for I took unpaid leave and enrolled in the Russian Language Department at Polytechnic University in Odessa, Ukraine. At that time, production in Russia was stopped. When I returned to Turkey, I received requests for construction materials, cafe equipment, etc. I started exporting by establishing my own company in 1997.
In 1999, St. I attended the international machinery fair held in St. Petersburg. While visiting the cultural and art venues of the city outside working hours, I had the opportunity to visit the wax sculpture museum and I was very impressed while visiting the museum. I knew that there was no such museum in our country. When I met with the museum officials, I learned that they could open exhibitions abroad if there was a demand. Thereupon, I took the initiative to break new ground in our country. After learning the conditions from the museum officials, I took a loan from three banks and rented the wax statues of 34 world leaders to be exhibited in our country for three months and brought them to Turkey. At that time, the public did not know what wax sculpture art was in Turkey. It was necessary to put a lot of effort into promotion. I was having difficulty finding an exhibition space. On the other hand, since I brought the exhibition to Turkey temporarily, I met with the museum officials when the extension period received from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism expired. Thereupon, he paid as if he were paying rent and bought 34 statues in St. I bought it from the St. Petersburg Museum.
I started having statues of Turkish elders, especially Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The number of statues is increasing, reaching 60 in 11 years, and names from Turkish and World history continue to be added to the museum. In order to introduce this art to the public, we opened 50 exhibitions in 26 cities in 11 years. As a result of these efforts, awareness about the art of wax sculpture has been raised among the public. While this situation is positive in terms of bringing the museum together with the public; On the other hand, it creates problems in terms of the precision of the sculptures. No matter how much care is taken, statues can be damaged during constant moving. For this reason, I occasionally receive training on the maintenance, repair and make-up of sculptures. My goal; "To establish a worldwide permanent Wax Sculpture Museum in Istanbul, with 100 Turkish and World famous celebrities, the firsts in the world, to represent our country in the best way by opening exhibitions abroad from time to time, and also to enable the training of wax sculpture artists in the workshop that can be established within the museum."
