Atatürk Museum

The house where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed as a tenant during the War of Independence was purchased by the Istanbul Municipality on 28 May 1928 and opened to visitors as the Atatürk Revolution Museum by the Governor and Mayor of Istanbul, Lütfi Kırdar, on 15 June 1942. The museum, which was repaired after the fire hazard on January 9, 1962, was reopened on March 4, 1962. It was restored by the Municipality in 1977 by the Turing Automobile Association and İş Bank, and was reopened to visitors on May 19, 1981. The museum was closed for repairs in 1989 and was restored once again by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and put into service again in 1991.

Mustafa Kemal Pasha prepared the liberation plans of the country together with his military and civilian friends in this house where he stayed between December 1918 and 16 May 1919. Among his colleagues, there were important names such as İsmet İnönü) Pasha, Ali Fuat (Cebesoy) Pasha, Kazım (Karabekir) Pasha and Rauf Orbay. During the reign of Mustafa Kemal Pasha, there were aide and dining rooms on the ground floor of the house, and a meeting and study hall and bedrooms on the second floor. The third floor was used by his mother Zübeyde Hanım and his sister Makbule Hanım. A significant part of the Atatürk Museum collection consists of Atatürk's personal belongings, clothes, uniforms, photographs of his military and civilian life, various handwritten documents, medals and souvenirs.

Among the items gifted by his sister Makbule Atadan in the museum are civilian clothes, handkerchiefs and shirts bearing the Mustafa Kemal coat of arms, and underwear. The marshal's uniform and the dress he wore at the Sivas Congress are among the items whose historical value will be emphasized. Parts of the writing set, cigarette cases, medals, and a wooden-furnished radio-turntable, which was a gift from the American President Roosevelt, are among the souvenirs. Oil paintings by painters İbrahim Çallı and Zeki Kocamemi are also important parts of the collection. Among the original works in the museum, there are also watercolor paintings painted by V. Pisani symbolizing the War of Independence.
